Carter's Fish Market at 1900 S Grand Ave E in Springfield is a straightforward, no-frills spot where locals come for reliably fresh fried fish and to pick up seafood from the market. While it’s not a sit-down restaurant, the walk-up window setup encourages quick orders and casual visits mostly geared toward lunch or early dinner crowds. Expect a steady flow of regulars who know what they want—walleye fillets and catfish strips tend to be top choices—especially when Lent rolls around and the pace picks up.

The building sits in an area that’s not necessarily picturesque but has become a well-known destination for folks craving classic Midwestern fish & chips. If you’re stopping by, ordering ahead by phone can save a lot of waiting time, particularly during busy midday hours. The food is made fresh to order, so when you grab your plate at the window, the fish still steams hot and moist under a light, seasoned breading.

On the menu, items like walleye lunches paired with “River Fries,” fried okra, hush puppies, and corn fritters reflect Southern and Midwestern influences that anchor this market’s appeal. Portions are generous and priced accessibly, making it a practical spot for a filling meal without fuss. Side dishes like coleslaw or fried green tomatoes complement the main fish offerings well, adding some variety if you’re feeding a small group or want a little extra with your fish.

This is a place best suited to those who appreciate straightforward seafood without the polish or ambiance of a formal restaurant. It’s about efficient service, hearty portions, and a genuine local favorite’s flavor rather than atmosphere or presentation. Many visitors are familiar with the pattern here—call ahead, pick up at the window, and enjoy the food nearby or take it home.

While the surrounding neighborhood might feel a bit rough around the edges, the steady stream of patrons throughout the day—from longtime locals to visitors willing to make the drive for good fish—speaks to the quality and consistency that Carter’s maintains. It’s especially popular among those who know their way around fish markets and value fresh, well-executed fried seafood at a fair price.

This is one of the amazing food spots located in a sketchy area that EVERYONE goes to. And I do mean EVERYONE. They are an actual fish market so if you are going to order you want to go to the walk up window. Don’t do what I did and walk into the market. Ordering was easy, they have huge signs showing prices. There’s open space to stand and wait if you want but CALLING IN your order so you can pick up and go is definitely most ideal. Everything was so fresh and well seasoned. I highly recommend Caters if you are pescatarian or even vegetarian.

I always call in my lunch order and it's usually ready when I get to the window unless it's Lent. Then they're insanely busy all day. The fried fish is always good and so is the sweet corn nuggets. I usually get walleye.

Still the best walleye you can buy. Large portions cooked to perfection, light breading with just tge right amount of seasoning.

When I'm in Springfield I always make a pit stop here. They make some of best fried fish period. Got my favorite walleye fillets 8.9 that comes with pickles, onion plus white bread and some fried okra 8.7. Everything is made to order so once you get you plate it's already piping hot. You get a decent amount of fish for the price too my only complaint is the hot sauce and tartar sauce both are below average. If they could get better sauces would rate this 5 stars. The customer service was great very polite and kind. Overall not a bad spot to grab fried fish anywhere. 8.8
